Many people living in one day at a time recovery after a short period of time in such recovery often confuse the reality of growth with the concept of being recovered. Too many people who have lived for years as chemically dependent people believe that they have ascended to a non-existing level of superiority in which they no longer need to learn or experience the ever growing lessons and gifts of one day at a time recovery. Although the delusion of being recovered is usually common in people living in the early years of recovery it can also rear its egoic imaginings in the minds of people who have been in recovery for many years. If we are lucky, constant and continuing self-examination will uncover the reality that we are still very much people living in one day at a time recovery from active chemical dependency. Understanding, and continual practice of such basic realities of recovery keep us living in a world that continues with growth, recovery and reality. We are all just an arm’s length away from relapse. We need ever be vigilant of this. Our daily freedom from active addiction is a gift. Growth reveals this to us. Peace.
